The Office of Surface Mining (OSM) is charged with two missions: First, ensure that active coal mines are safe and environmentally sensitive; and restore original contours complete with topsoil. Second, through the Abandoned Mine Land program OSM is to correct problems associated with past mining practices, including subsidence, and acid mine drainage.
